Immunisation Courses with Alys
Useful information
Thank you for choosing to train with me. Here is some useful information about the most popular courses I deliver in the field of Immunisation.
I tailor all my courses to suit your setting, whether you work in general practice, occupational health, private clinics, universities, or community services. Bring all your immunology questions!
I do love PowerPoint, but these days I mostly teach using online presentations.
Why?
I keep them (and my other unlimited access website 'alyssclassroom.co.uk') updated LIVE so when looking back - any changes are on there. Static PowerPoint slides can be out of date the day after the course in changeable fields like immunisation.
Extra optional post-course learning is slotted in here and there for those who want to go a bit deeper or spend more time on a topic.
Reduced admin: NO chasing up, or waiting for slides before or after a course, no 'email-in-spam' issues, no mass mailers, no hassle! Instant access to the presentation from the day of the course.
The presentation can be viewed simultaneously by learners while on the course (from another tab or device). Handy for those who need to go back and visit something during the day, or if they want to access a link from it for an activity, or simply zoom in a bit to read smaller text.
Find your presentation above. Please note: The password is issued on the day. Please do not share it with non-delegates.
About the courses: Learning outcomes & course outlines
Look through this document to get a good idea of what your course is based on, and what your role in immunisation should look like in practice, and all the expected learning outcomes and competencies to fulfill. All the immunisation course contents are based on this minimum standards document.
Useful documents to look at before, during and after your course:
UK Immunisation Schedule (select PDF version)
Incomplete Vaccine Algorithm (select PDF version)
Anaphylaxis algorithm poster (on the 3rd link mentioned)
If the organiser has NOT sent their own workbook for your foundation immunisation course this is recommended printing too (you may need to print more or less 'disease pages' depending on your role). Vaccine preventable diseases workbook. You will be making a start on this during the course, and completing it after the course.
And, of course, please feel free to have a browse of my other website at any time.
The Immunisation Update course covers information on:
Changes to national vaccine policy and schedules
Reminders around the immune response to vaccines and how vaccines work
Refreshers around vaccine preventable diseases
The different types of vaccines, their composition and their indications and contraindications
Current issues and hot topics in vaccination
Communicating with patients, parents and carers about vaccines
Legal issues as applied to vaccination: consent and legal mechanisms to supply and administer vaccines
Updates on the storage and handling of vaccines
A good foundation knowledge of all of the above are assumed. If you are not confident or new to this then a foundation course might be a better choice.
The Immunisation Foundation course covers information on:
The aims of vaccination, national vaccine policy and schedules
The immune response to vaccines and how vaccines work
Vaccine preventable diseases
The different types of vaccines, their composition and their indications and contraindications
Current issues in vaccination
Communicating with patients, parents and carers about vaccines
Legal issues as applied to vaccination: consent and legal mechanisms to supply and administer vaccines
Storage and handling of vaccines
Correct administration of vaccines
Anaphylaxis, basic life support and adverse reactions (Note: practical BLS training is NOT included - please make arrangements to complete your BLS training separately)
Documentation, record keeping and reporting
Strategies for optimising vaccination uptake

Alys Bunce (RGN, PGCE, BSC Psych, MFTM RCPS(Glasg)
I began my travel health career in 2011 after working as a staff nurse in a busy emergency department in Manchester. Before qualifying as a nurse, I lectured in Psychology and hold a post-compulsory PGCE. Over the years my writing has been published across psychology, education, travel medicine and primary care journals.
I’ve been lucky enough to travel through South Africa, South America, Europe and South East Asia, and I love weaving academic, clinical and global perspectives into my teaching. Fun fact about me: I've been bitten by a rabid dog!! I spent many happy years as Lead Travel Health Nurse and CQC-registered manager at the Manchester branch of Nomad Travel, and later became the Education Lead for the same company, before moving into freelance work. And yes, I have had post-exposure rabies treatment and survived to tell the tale!
These days - when I’m not negotiating snack choices with my two young children - I spend most of my time training primary care clinicians across the UK in immunisation, phlebotomy and travel health. I deliver talks a few times a year at large conferences - and if I'm not delivering, I'm usually there anyway soaking it all up!
I currently hold the Module One Lead position on the Diploma in Travel Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. I have some regular occupational health clients based in universities and police forces whom I love to visit annually for their bespoke immunisation and travel health updates. And I've been known to visit tropical medicine wards in acute settings to deliver a seminar or two as well.
I’m the creator of 'Train With Alys', the teaching platform, and the 'Alys's Classroom' resource hub that I (and sometimes others) use to deliver sessions. My aim is to make learning enjoyable and accessible to all. Can't wait to meet you!
