Welcome to my cosy little lab
Next, dive right in
First, make sure you have the email with the LAB CODES and the LOGBOOK to hand (either digitally or printed out)
THEN get a brew and some snacks.
Just starting out? Here's your to do list
You will need to:
Have a strong desire to help others learn.
Have a passion for your subject and good knowledge in that area.
Develop a business mindset because if you are self-employed now you’re now entering a whole new world of negotiations, contracts, invoicing, and tax returns.
Gather friends and mentors to help support the minefield that adult education throws your way. Gather as many unofficial mentors as you can along the way because:
You're about to be in the spotlight. Prepare to be judged. Sometimes unfairly. Sometimes by lots of people all at once. Sometimes internally by yourself. Brace yourself.
Get some teaching equipment: some of that will involve technology and spare technology.
Ensure you have contingencies for everything. A bad experience early on can REALLY affect your morale and confidence.
Plan to do (if not already) a comprehensive course in education to get a super in-depth look at the theory behind everything you’re going to be doing. It may not be a requirement in order to teach in your subject area, but it will almost certainly help you along the way.
And of course… you will ultimately need a course to deliver. Whether that is your own course or someone else’s, use the logbook you have been provided with to explore what is in that course and how it’s going to look at the point of delivery. THEN you’re going to practice your course A LOT before delivery (even if it is just to the dog) Whatever you do, speak it OUT LOUD.
Welcome to the wonderful field of educating others. It's a joy, an honour, and a fantasticly reflective adventure. Tool up and dive in. You're gonna love it.
